From The Conran Shop's exclusive Inspirations collection inspired by the book Terence Conran's Inspiration. The Inspirations collection at The Conran Shop looks at the ideas and pieces which have inspired Terence Conran throughout his illustrious career. The Conran Shop has selected some of Terence's main inspirations and has turned these into a series of projects working with designers from the UK, France, Germany, South Africa, Italy and the U.S. Each project expands upon a single one of Terence Conran's inspirations, moving it on in unexpected directions and using it to inspire their own work.
Jugs appear in Terence Conran's Inspiration because of their pleasing and satisfying shape. According to Terence their “fullness represents the shape of a woman’s body”. Images included in the book range from a traditional jug and bowl washstand set to Picasso’s painting 'Still Life with Jug and Apples'.
Reminiscent of these classic jug shapes is the work of two South African designers, Di Marshall and Mick Haigh. Both were commissioned for this project to take the essence of the jug in the Picasso painting and to translate it into their own work. The result is a collection of eccentric and exaggerated forms in a variety of sizes.
Di Marshall aims to help to provide employment for the local un-skilled and poorly educated population by devising a method of manufacturing tableware that is easy to teach and relatively easy to learn. Her Wonkiware collection of ceramics is a best-selling range at the Conran Shop.
