American designers Charles (1907–1978) and Ray Eames (1912–1988) made major contribuitions in many fields of design including industrial design, furniture design, art, graphic design, film and architecture. Their extensive influence is celebrated in the term “Eames Era.” The couple were married in 1941, moved to Los Angeles and established an office together. In almost four decades of collaborative work, they created an amazingly diverse oeuvre comprising many groundbreaking furniture designs, significant works of architecture, exhibitions, films, toys, graphics, textile designs and an immense number of photographs. The Eames’ creative work, which has strongly influenced our understanding of design and the role of the designer in modern society, ended with Charles’ death in 1978. Ray followed him by ten years to the day. Yet the Eames’ oeuvre, which embodies their humanist persepectives and visions, has remained permanently relevant and vital.
